His history

Abby Aldrich Rockefeller and 2 of her friends Lillie P. Bliss and Mary Quinn Sulivan started the Museum.

Their goal was to create an institution dedicated solely to modern art and which allows to preserve known works but also to make known young contemporary artists.

On November 7, 1929 , a room located in the Heckscher Building was loaned for a major exhibition that will raise funds for the construction of the Museum of Modern Art.

The bet is successful because, by exhibiting paintings by Cézanne , Van Gogh or Gaugin , around 50,000 dollars have returned to the coffers and will thus allow the construction of the museum.

Before being in its current location, the museum passed through several premises. In 1929 he occupied offices on 5th Avenue, then in 1932 he was in a townhouse which was rented to the Rockefellers.

In 1937 he occupied premises on the ground floor of the Rockefeller Center and finally in 1939, the architects Philip Goodwin and Edward Durell Stone built the building where the museum is currently located. It has seen many expansions and modifications since but it still remains in the same place.

In 2019 , extension works were carried out to create a new space dedicated to artistic creations, the latter costing around 450 million dollars .

MoMA's library includes approximately 300,000 books and exhibition catalogs , over 1,000 periodical titles, and over 40,000 ephemera files on artists or movements.

Additionally, you can view all of MoMa's works and their location within the museum on its official website.

It is also possible to book tickets via Passes which allow you to discover New York's must-sees, this option is described in my "my tips" section.

The Museum is FREE on Fridays from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m., however, you must buy tickets at the Uniqlo store located a few steps away. The only downside? Waiting. During this time of the week, the number of visitors is quite substantial, so I advise you to arrive well before 4 p.m. to avoid a long waiting time.
